Four BSF Personnel Killed, Dozens Injured After Bus Falls Into Gorge in J&K’s Budgam

A tragic accident unfolded in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district, where four personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) lost their lives, and dozens were injured after a bus carrying them plunged into a deep gorge.

The accident occurred on a treacherous road near Brel of Waterhaal area of Budgam on leading to widespread grief and raising concerns about road safety in the region.

The Incident

According to initial reports, the BSF bus was carrying personnel returning from a routine duty assignment when the driver lost control of the vehicle on a sharp bend. The bus veered off the road and plummeted into a steep gorge.

Rescue teams, including local authorities, BSF personnel, and disaster response forces, were immediately dispatched to the site of the accident.

The accident took place when a hired bus carrying BSF jawans for election duty in the upcoming second phase of assembly polls fell into a gorge near Brel of Watarhaal, according to officials

Casualties and Injuries

Four BSF personnel were killed on the spot due to the impact of the crash. Dozens of others sustained serious injuries, with several in critical condition. The injured were quickly evacuated to nearby hospitals for treatment, with some requiring airlifting to specialized medical facilities in Srinagar due to the severity of their injuries.

Rescue and Relief Operations

The rescue operation proved challenging due to the difficult terrain and the depth of the gorge. Local residents and security forces played a vital role in assisting rescue teams in retrieving the injured and transferring them to medical centers.

Medical teams were mobilized to ensure immediate care for the injured personnel, and emergency services worked around the clock to stabilize those in critical condition.

Official Response

Following the incident, senior BSF officials and the Jammu and Kashmir administration expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and pledged to provide all necessary assistance to the injured personnel.

The Director General of BSF also announced that an inquiry would be conducted to ascertain the exact cause of the accident and whether any lapses in vehicle maintenance or road conditions contributed to the tragedy.

The Union Home Minister, along with other political leaders, offered their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The minister also stated that the government would take steps to enhance road safety measures, particularly for the armed forces who frequently travel through the region’s challenging and dangerous terrain.

Road Safety Concerns

The accident once again highlights the hazardous conditions of roads in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in hilly regions like Budgam, where narrow roads, sharp turns, and unpredictable weather make driving perilous.

In recent years, such accidents have become all too common, with both civilian and military personnel often falling victim to road mishaps.The authorities are expected to review existing road infrastructure and enforce stricter safety measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.

Additionally, experts are calling for regular safety audits of vehicles transporting security forces in these sensitive areas.

The tragic loss of four BSF personnel in the Budgam bus accident is a painful reminder of the risks faced by security forces operating in difficult terrains.

As the nation mourns the loss, efforts are being made to ensure that the injured recover swiftly and that road safety improvements are implemented to prevent such accidents from happening again.

The incident underscores the urgent need for better infrastructure and safety protocols to protect those who serve in some of the most challenging regions of the country.

Additionally, the second phase of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) will be held on 25 September.
