India Makes History: Men’s and Women’s Teams Win Gold at 45th Chess Olympiad at Budapest

India’s Chess Whiz Kid D Gukesh Strikes Gold, Defeats Russia’s Vladimir Fedoseev to Seal Historic Gold in 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad, Budapest 2024.

In a thrilling conclusion to the 45th Chess Olympiad in Hungary, Indian sensation D Gukesh outmaneuvered Russian grandmaster Vladimir Fedoseev on Sunday, securing India’s maiden gold medal in the prestigious tournament.

Gukesh’s victory marked the perfect finale to India’s spectacular campaign, cementing the country’s emergence as a chess powerhouse.

The 16-year-old prodigy’s impressive win over Fedoseev, ranked among the world’s top players, underscored his own rapid rise to international prominence.India’s historic gold medal triumph at the Budapest Olympiad is a testament to the team’s collective brilliance, strategic depth, and Gukesh’s individual genius.

Arjun Erigaisi, who has also had a terrific outing in Budapest picked up a win over Serbian Jan Subelj on the final day of the event.

The Indian team for the open category included Gukesh, Erigaisi, Praggnanandhaa R, Vidit Gujrathi, Pentala Harikrishna and Srinath Narayanan.

Praggnanadhaa added to the proceedings with his win over Anton Demchenko, as India earned a decisive 3-0 triumph over Slovenia with a game to spare.

The Indian men’s unit picked up an overall 21 out of the available 22 points in Hungary in an absolutely dominant showing.

India’s performance in Recent Years

India won their first gold medal at the Olympiad when held in person; the last time was when they shared gold during an online Olympiad held during the pandemic.

Their best performances prior to this year have been the bronzes they won in 2022 (at Chennai) and 2014 (Tromso, Norway.)

In a thrilling finale, India’s women’s chess team outmaneuvered Azerbaijan to secure the coveted gold medal at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad 2024.

Under the guidance of Captain Abhijit Kunte, this talented quintet demonstrated exceptional skill, strategy, and teamwork to achieve India’s maiden women’s chess Olympiad gold.

Harika and Vantika register wins in their respective boards as India hands Azerbaijan a 3.5-0.5 loss in the final round.

Everyone were waiting for the match result of KAZ vs USA in the women’s section. The tiebreaker calculations were complex, it would be a very good move for India if both remaining boards were drawn finally, the results came up and it was a draw of KAZ vs USA and which resulted in India’s favour and India clinched another gold in the 2024 Olympiad.
