Kerala Reports 2nd Mpox Case

Mpox Cases Rise in Kerala: State Authorities Strengthen Safety Measures

The Recent Mpox Outbreak in Kerala: A Cause for Concern

Kerala, a state in southwestern India, has reported its second confirmed case of Mpox, a viral disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV). This development has sparked concern among health officials and the general public, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and preparedness.

The patient, a young individual who recently traveled to Kerala from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is currently hospitalized in Ernakulam and reported to be in stable condition. This latest case follows the state’s first Mpox diagnosis, which was reported in a 38-year-old man from Malappuram who also returned from the UAE.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, prompting Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, to urge international travelers returning to the state to seek immediate medical attention if they exhibit symptoms. To prepare for potential cases, the health department has set up isolation wards in 14 hospitals across Kerala.

Mpox symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion, and rash or skin lesions. Early detection and treatment are crucial in preventing complications and containing the spread of the disease.

In response to the growing concern, Kerala’s health department has intensified surveillance and contact tracing measures. Health officials are working closely with airports and international travel agencies to monitor incoming passengers, particularly from affected areas.

The general public can take proactive steps to minimize the risk of transmission. These include:-

• Avoiding close contact with individuals showing Mpox symptoms

• Wearing masks and maintaining social distancing in public-

• Practicing good hygiene, including frequent handwashing

• Seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms arise

The Kerala government’s prompt response and preparedness measures demonstrate a commitment to containing the outbreak. However, continued public awareness and cooperation are essential in preventing further spread.

As the situation unfolds, it is crucial to stay informed through reliable sources and follow guidelines issued by health authorities. By working together, Kerala can effectively manage the Mpox outbreak and protect its citizens.

In conclusion, the second confirmed Mpox case in Kerala serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and preparedness in the face of public health emergencies. Swift action, public awareness, and cooperation will be instrumental in containing the spread of the disease and ensuring the well-being of the community.

Health Minister Veena George has urged all international travellers returning to Kerala to seek immediate medical attention if they exhibit Mpox symptoms. To manage any potential surge, the health department has prepared isolation wards in 14 hospitals across the state, ensuring readiness to tackle the situation should it escalate.
