Nitish Kumar announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for Gagangir attack victims

Ganderbal Terror attack: Nitish Kumar condoles the demise of three labourers, announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief over the recent terror attack in Gagangir, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of several laborers. It included three deceased from Bihar. In response to this tragedy, Nitish Kumar announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for each of the families of the deceased victims.

He has also instructed state officials to ensure that these families receive additional benefits through existing welfare schemes from the Labor and Social Welfare Departments. Moreover, the Bihar Resident Commissioner in New Delhi has been tasked with coordinating the return of the bodies of the deceased to their home state.

This attack occurred at a construction site on the Srinagar-Leh national highway, where the laborers were targeted. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from political leaders across the country. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. People calling it a cowardly act of terrorism aimed at innocent civilians.

The details of the attack

The Gagangir terror attack occurred on October 15, 2024, in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. The attack targeted laborers who were working at a tunnel construction site along the Srinagar-Leh highway, specifically in the Sonamarg region. Terrorists, indiscriminately opened fire on a group of workers as they were returning to their camp in the evening. The terrorists were believed to be at least two individuals. The laborers included both locals and non-locals from states like Bihar.

As a result of this attack, two workers died on the spot, and several others were seriously injured. Tragically, three additional victims succumbed to their injuries later, including a doctor who was also caught in the crossfire.
